Thank you to all of those who have responded to the request for volunteers, we're making progress! But I still need more folks. So what may be keeping you from volunteering?
This is my first Writercon, I wouldn't be useful to you.
Oh contraire! You don't need to have previous Writercon (or con) experience to help. We've got orientation sessions that will get you up to speed and answer your questions.
I'm introverted.
No worries, many of us are! Volunteering gives you a task and makes interacting and connecting easier.
I'm totally planning to, I just haven't had a chance to sit down and figure it out.
If at all possible, please take five minutes right now, look over the list, look over the schedule and drop me a line today. (Please! I've got some work travel beginning Monday and the more I can do prior to that, the better.)
So, below are the needs, including two new ones, so take a peek.
Thursday Airport Greeters.
Description: Sit at the Starbucks in baggage claim in the Lindberg terminal, wear a 3 inch smiley face sticker to be easy to identify, drink the coffee beverage of your choice, and wait for other travels to come to you. Then either walk them or confirm the directions to the train (aka lightrail). I got a few locals in mind to help, but I'd like two per shift, and really, once you've walked the route yourself, it's easy as pie. Thursday times:
9 – 10 am
10 – 11 am
1 – 2 pm
2 – 3 pm
3 – 4 pm
4 – 5 pm
Thursday – "Don't worry, be happy" opening party.
Description: Give out stickers, beads, leis, and generally keep an eye on the crowd for those in need of a friendly face.
7 - 8 pm
8 - 9 pm
Security - Friday Cocktail Party.
Description: Stand at the door, verify that anyone going in has their cocktail ticket. Watch for anyone behaving inappropriately or overly intoxicated, working with the concomm staff if problems arise. In handy half-hour slots to make it easy to still party. (And talk about a great job where you can see and/or be seen at the party scene.)
8 – 8:30 pm
8:30 – 9 pm
9 – 9:30 pm
9:30 – 10 pm
10:30 – 11 pm
11 – 11:30 pm
11:30 - Midnight

Friday, 4:30 - 5:30
Sunday, 9 - 10 am
Sunday, 10 - 11 am

Programming Room Host
Description: Go to the room a few minutes in advance of the session/panel/workshop. Make sure there's water and cups. Collect up stray paper afterward. Be general support to be a runner, etc., if there's a complication and need for a concomm staff.
This job is usually one of the favs - volunteer WHILE seeing that session/panel/workshop you were going to go to anyway! I've had very few taker, so few it's not worth listing out every one I need. So check out the schedule and let me know. The only caveat is that the closed workshops needs to have a room host who is already on the list to be in the workshop.
Please email me at volunteers at writercon dot com and be as specific as possible with what you can do. Ex: Security from 10:30 - 11 pm at the cocktail party. Or Room Host for the Sunday 10:00am - 11:30am session "Here Be Pirates: The Thorny Problem of Plagiarism"
Thank you!
