Volunteerifric!

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Writercon. There is no way to pull off a gathering of this size and magnitude without the help of so many generous people! At both previous gatherings, we've had an overwhelming response, and we hope for the same this year!

For those wondering if we're Rumpelstiltskin and will demand your firstborn if you hint at a willingness to volunteer, don't worry, the commitment is only an hour or two at a time, and ideally will dovetail with places you already wanted to be anyhow! While the specifics of how many volunteers we'll need and where is being worked out, I wanted to at least whet your appetite and see who might be interested.

Pre-registration: A great activity for early arrivers. Collate info, help with general set up.

Registration: Signing people in, getting their badges, etc.

Greeters: As people arrive it's great to have folks who make the jet-lagged and possibly overwhelmed feel welcome. So many of us are wallflowers by nature, so sometimes it just takes someone noticing and saying, "Hi, I'm glad you're here."

Local Runners/Ops: I'm looking for all the local help I can gather. In part it's helpful to have local folks who can do runs to get what's needed since they know exactly where to go, etc. Also, I'd love to have enough local folks that during the primary arrival times we would have people stationed along the light rail line from the airport to the hotel in order to make that experience as stress free as possible.

Programming attendant: Responsible for ensuring that the room is set up properly and water is available for participants, they'll notify the programming chairs if participants don't show, or if there is a problem. If there is a programming event you definitely want to attend, this is a great way because it ensures there will be space and you get a good seat towards the front.

Hospitality: The hospitality room will be open almost all of the time, and we'll need people to take shifts. That includes being there, making sure we're up on supplies (liquor, snacks -don't worry, if we run out, you don't have to get them, you just have to let one of us know), and generally helping to provide a place where folks feel like they can relax and/or mingle.

Guest Services: 'personal assistant' types to help get guests organized get them where they need to be, make introductions, etc.

Con shut down: Perfect for those who are going to be leaving later on the last day. Help with packing things up, etc.

Jacks and Jills of all Trades: People who are willing to fill in, or will be happy to do whatever.

There are some jobs that will be defined later on. If there's an area in which you are especially interested in that's not listed, let me know. There will always be things which need to be done! If you see an area that you have experience in, or are interested in a particular category, please contact me at volunteers at writercon dot com. Or if you have questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

volunteer

I'm arriving sometime Thursday evening, so would be available for Friday morning stuff - registration, hospitality, whatever. I could also help with programming with some of the presenters/panels. Let me know where you're short help.

Volunteering

I'll restrain myself from shouting "PICK ME! PICK ME!" and flailing wildly... but I'm pretty much doing that anyway. Please count me in to help where you need me. I plan to arrive Friday morning (possibly late Thursday night) and leave in the afternoon on Sunday. I'm up for anything, but I did help out at the Hospitality Suite at WinCon so I have a tiny bit of experience with that and am happy to take a few shifts there as needed.

I volunteer for

I volunteer for everything/anything. (Long as it doesn't require heavy lifting or actual running, I can do it.)

*flails wildly* PICK ME, PICK ME, PICK ME!

I haven't made any definite decisions on when to leave, but my schedule is very flexible. So I can stay late if I need to, arrive early if I need to (and I have no problem sleeping in my car if I stay too long, or arrive too early).

Helping people find the site

I live in Minneapolis, so I can meet people at the Nicollet Mall light rail station and walk them to the convention site, if that's helpful. I would also like to host an informal fan-led event, preferably a Snape-centric discussion for the Harry Potter fandom, but a more general one discussing characterization and such is O.K. if that's what people prefer. There is a wonderful cafe on Lyndale Ave. S. and 26th St. called Common Roots Cafe, on the Route 4 bus line (or about a half hour or so walk from the Radisson), if people want a food venue, or a couple of good coffeehouses downtown as well.

Please contact me with more information as to what you need and how to go about setting up a fan-led event (time slots, etc. - I don't want to conflict with workshops and other official events). I will be available Thursday evening, and all day Friday and Saturday, but not on Sunday. Thanks!

Submitting a fan-led event

Please do submit a fan-led event! Here's the form to fill out; we'll collect all the details there and then get in touch with you about coordinating it:

Our volunteer coordinator will get in touch with you about walking people to the convention site. Thank you for volunteering!

Bohemianspirit,

That would be great to have your help with helping folks get to the con site. If you could email me at volunteers at writercon dot com, that would be great. That'll help me with coordinating and communicating. Thank you!

Already lost

Hi. I'm flying in from Ohio and my flight gets there early Thurs. afternoon. My problem is that I have no clue about even finding
the train despite the excellent directions posted. Do you have any idea how expensive a taxi would be from the airport to the hotel?
Or, is there anyone arriving at about the same time that I could tag along with?

train and taxi info

Hi, Bee -

If you would like to give the train a try, I can assure you it's really easy. Which part of the directions was confusing? Maybe I can clear it up for you.

Basically, when you get into the airport, assuming you're in Lindbergh Terminal, the light rail station is located right below the Transit Center, between the Blue and Red Parking ramps. Since it's in the same building, everyone who works at the airport should be able to point you in the right direction. The pictures in the directions were taken on location, so if you printed them and followed them, they would take you where you needed to go.

As for taxi rates, from the airport's website: "Downtown Minneapolis is approximately 16 miles from the airport, with fares averaging $34-$44."
